The idea beneath the story

Why the title matters.

Power Was My Mentor is not about celebrity worship. It is about what happens when an unknown comedian comes close enough to greatness to recognize the greatness within himself.

During eight pivotal months—from August 1996 through April 1997—Bill Cosby entered Art Garfield’s life. He did not simply offer advice. He offered something more demanding: proximity to a standard.

His guidance, protection, and expectations forced Garfield to see beyond the limits of his circumstances. In the presence of someone who had already reached the heights Garfield dreamed of, ambition became responsibility. Potential became something he could no longer ignore.

Power was not simply the man.
Power was the lesson.

That power gave Garfield the courage to rise above treachery, trust his inner voice, and continue pursuing the life he had once only imagined. A true mentor does not merely hand you answers. A true mentor awakens the part of you capable of finding your own.

And once Garfield understood that lesson, no one could take it away from him.
